Reminiscence of Mario Miranda

Exactly a decade ago, I went to Bangalore on the invitation of Karnataka cartoonists' association to the Telugu political cartoonists. the occasion was to felicitate Mario Miranda, Yesudasan, Bapu,Gopulu and Fudnis etc. with Lifetime Achievement Awards. The hotel was colourful with cartoonists from different states. I was busy with 'spot caricaturing' and soliciting autographs of the invitees. Then I spotted Mario Miranda at a distance. I recalled his Mumbai buildings sketches. He was more like his Rajbai Tower, Royal Opera House. Goa beaches, murals, the slanting coconut trees...scores of his illustrations passed before my eyes. "He is not a mediocre stuff like us, man. His is a royal family. He is handsome, modeled for Raymonds...entertains plenty of girlfriends..." introduced veteran cartoonist Mohan. I had tucked up a few of my caricatures and cartoons to show him. I felt mine were the dirty stones of Musi and could not dare to expose in front of the genuine pearls of Goa. I kept them tucked firmly under my arm pit.
The legend spoke about his cartoons in Mad and the Mad cartoonist Don Martin, about the pocket cartoons he did for pocket money...he spoke about many things.
During our student days, since there was no access to specialized art courses, we had copied cartoonists such as Mohan,Bapu,Sridhar, Surendra etc. And, there was no 'net culture' yet. I was introduced to Mario's cartoons in the pink-coloured Economic Times, which came to our village via an evening bus. The cartoons were totally different from the local stuff. They were even different from the RK's comman man. High-class ladies, detailed sketches of Bombay buildings, Goa beaches....they were fresh and new and different. A pumpkin head with a brinjal nose; eternally obese 'netas' with a pyramid shaped'gandhi topi'; sexy bimbos wearing polka dot nighties...they were absolutely exhilarating. Every character of his cartoons was doing something. His miss Fonseca was as close to me as was my neighbour. We were experiencing frustration when our 'copying' his illustrations did not yield even remote resemblances.

Some of his contemporaries -- RK Laxman, OV Vijayan, Kutti, Abu -- were adorning the shelves of our college library, but I was fond of Miranda.
The Sunday morning facebook message screaming 'Mario Miranda is no more' reminded me of Bombay I had witnessed in Bangalore. Miranda must be visiting the gateway of Heaven through the Gateway of India, to make a detailed sketches of the other world.

My post - Auto jaani-Ayn Rand -- in my blog was appreciated by the American Narth Carolina State university professors. One of the professors CAT WARREN even mailed me, saying "you are incredibly talented". They procured my caricature of Ayn Rand for thier maganize's article, Ayn Rand Influence on College Curriculum, for $500 as a one time copy right!
This, I feel is a great achievement for a regional cartoonist. I am thankful to Ram Gopal Varma and Auto Jaani for being instrumental in producing the caricature...
As KNY Patanjali said, any one can give you knowledge, but food must be earned by ourselves. They bestowed me knowledge, I earned food.

This is a portrait of S.V.Rangarao,I drew this a few minutes after watching the evergreen masterpiece -- Maayabazaar. The transformation of robust Ghatotkacha to an innocent Sasirekha is hilarious.
This movie is a text book for all filmmakers, actors and technicians. Perhaps, all positive adjectives in any language would fall short of describing aptly the movie.

If Avatar's James camaron is running 200 km/hr[According to Avatar reviews], our own Mayabazaar's director had walked at that rate long back.
I know there is nothing much we all could do except getting thrilled in the total treat called Mayabazaar.
I wish we could invite Avatar's Navi of Pandora to Earth to watch Mayabazaar.

[p.s:Sorry.. It's a daring step to review this amazing Mayabazaar..It's only for the people who donot know about this movie]

NTR,MOHAN and I

Watching Mohan sir reminds of Amitabh in Nishabd. Romancing the sixteen-year stroke with the sixty-year master is exhilarating.

While I was studying eighth class, I tumbled upon the NTR caricatures of Mohan in the daily Udayam, and I promptly fell in love with them. The stumpy, chubby NTR fetched me Rs.2/kilo later!!
Since X class, I had been literally obsessed with NTR caricatures by my future guru, Mohan, and continued to romance with them until PG.

I left my parents in my village and came in search of Mohan...I spent three years with him in Red Hills and LIC colony Flat no.73. I know Mohan sir sanitizing, and at the same time, smearing mud on "nobodys" like me, who do not know the difference between anatomy and autonomy.

An artist who worked in the team of Steven Spielberg told me: there is a perfect line hidden in the hundreds of lines you scribble.
But the only man whose single line comes out perfect is Mohan sir.

Nobody could master Mohan's line since NTR to Jr.NTR period.

The current sensation 'AVATAR'has its roots in India,particularly the characters have similarities with original sketches of Mohan.

M for Mindthing

I don't read essays of TJS George, the Indian Express columnist. I never read Telugu translations of Dastovisky.
But I still draw.
As rightly said by KNY Patanjali, 'what have we got to lose if our ignorance offends no one?'

[P.S. NTR still haunts me.My dream of seeing Mohan sir's "NTR" images in 3D remained just that - a dream [Face to Face with Mohan 8-30 to 9-00 pm 25-12-09 only on TV5]

This is vins[vijay n seth], a Mumbai cartoonist.
His work shows a pronounced European influence, he having met all the top names in Europe, including French cartoonist Andre Francois, considered the father of modern cartooning.Vins contributes for various publications such as Reader’s Digest and Indian Express.
He is now president of the Indian chapter of the Federation of European Cartoonists’ Organisation.

One day, I received a message from Vins that I should meet him.
It was followed by an sms the next day. I couldn't wait more. I went to Sheethal Enclave located in Banjara Hills.
Vins was apparently impressed by my work. Seems he told his Paris friend, Parick Pinter.
He spread out his Darvent pencil sketches, masking liquid paintings, calligraphy ink drawings. He used colors from Holland and paper from France. When I told about my father, a specialist in IKKAT art, he was visibly surprised.
Vins reminded me of my drawing teacher in high school, Sri Kalidas Rao sir, who, incidentally, is a friend of my father.

We exchanged our cartoons. His suggestion: use a better paper.
I thought to myself, "why should I spoil valuable papers?"

Auto jaani-Ayn Rand

This is Ayn Rand caricature..i've done this with passion on Rand's philosophical quotations which are introduced by 'auto jaani'.
He is a school drop out. He ferries people around the city in his auto-rickshaw.
He is usually to be found in a liquor shop in Chilkalguda, or Anjali Theatre in
Secunderabad, or some other cinema hall. Before you jump to conclusions that he
is just another uneducated soul, check this out. He is an ardent follower of
philosophy, particularly Philosophy inspired by the likes of Friedrich
Nietzsche or the famous writer, Ayn Rand.

If anywhere in Hyderabad you come across an auto that is full of philosophical
quotes by Nietzsche or Ayn Rand, then you’ve just discovered “Auto-Jaani”. I
myself discovered Auto-Jaani on one “blog”buster. Now, I find philosophy and
all the headaches associated with it absolutely thrilling.

I have been at Ram Gopal Varma's blog ever since I read Ramu's 'I hate Michael Jackson' in the newspaper which also mentioned his blog domain name.

I found more content in the blog, most of which is absent in his movies.
Better to try all our Telugu directors imitate his 'education' instead of his 'copying style'.
'his blog is the most addictive thing like sex and vodka' commented one of his blog followers.
It is absolutely correct..like all bad things, it is packaged attractively, and just like sex or vodka, should not be taken seriously
He disturbs me..
I am a victim.
I've said it once and I'll say it again...I hate Ram gopal varma.
